NSK QuickStop Bearing for Dental Turbines
NSK Europe has introduced the new QuickStop bearing designed for high-speed dental turbine handpieces. Its innovative construction and unique rubber seal help stop a rotor rotating at speeds of up to 400,000 rpm more quickly while reducing the risk of contamination being drawn back into the instrument.
Dental turbine handpieces operate at extremely high rotational speeds and have very low internal friction. When the air supply is switched off, a conventional rotor may continue to rotate for several seconds. At the same time, negative pressure inside the handpiece may draw saliva, blood, tooth particles and other contaminants into the instrument.
How does the NSK QuickStop bearing work?
The QuickStop bearing incorporates a special rubber seal that automatically responds to the air supply.
When the air supply is switched on, the seal opens and allows the bearing to rotate freely at the required operating speed.
When the air supply is switched off, the seal immediately comes into contact with the inner ring of the bearing. This rapidly reduces the rotor speed and simultaneously seals the bearing, helping prevent contaminants from being drawn into the handpiece.
What are the main advantages of NSK QuickStop?
The NSK QuickStop solution offers several important advantages:
- faster stopping of the dental turbine rotor
- reduced risk of saliva, blood and particle ingress
- improved safety and hygiene
- compact bearing design
- compatibility with existing dental handpiece designs
- no need to significantly increase the size or complexity of the instrument
- improved operating efficiency and functionality
QuickStop can be integrated into existing dental turbine handpieces by replacing a single component. This enables manufacturers to improve safety and performance without redesigning the entire instrument.
The NSK QuickStop bearing demonstrates how precision bearing technology can solve a long-standing technical challenge and contribute to safer, more efficient dental equipment.
